I’m with my family today. If all goes to plan, we’ll spend the morning at the children’s museum, then have lunch at one of our favorite restaurants followed by a walk down the riverfront.

So far, I made this cool thing, which another child came to knock over the minute I walked away. Such is life. We abandon control over things that don’t matter, like a pile of sticks that could be something cool for a hot minute, then a beautiful mess delighting a stranger’s child.

I hope whatever you choose to do this Independence Day, it brings you great joy. Or failing that, at least a reprieve from the efforts we make to keep a white knuckle grip on the things we can’t control. Oh, and ice cream. Try to eat some.
