Whenever I forge ahead into a device upgrade, I feel like this guy.

Typically, my new devices are usually gifts. My iPad was one I sort of wanted, but could have easily lived without. Until I actually got it, and fell in love. But it was always bound to the wifi, and therefore I could avoid scary things like data plans and cloud technology.

I’ve avoided smart phones for long enough, though. I realized on my trip to Paris how valuable a data plan would have been for things like translations, maps, and generally staying in touch with my son while we were gone. I still wanted to maintain a low monthly phone bill, though. So I procrastinated longer.

Then, September came and went. During that month, I ended up with three windfall checks and some extra money to spend on a device upgrade. Fortunately, I was able to procure the new phone, but it took three days to get it up and running. The nice part about buying an iPhone (not the 6, but the 5s) was that they were sort of reasonable. But the store was insane with people who were looking to upgrade their devices to the latest and greatest.

There’s never a good time to be without contact with the outside world these days. But while my husband was travelling for business may have been the worst time for me. I realized this only after I pulled the trigger. It’s been almost a week now, and I’m still figuring out what the phone can do. However, I do think I’ve made the right call. (Pun intended…)
