I came up with this recipe as a conglomeration of several other wheat bread recipes. It was really a recipe of convenience, in the hopes of using up the ingredients I had on hand and making something that resembled edible foodstuffs.

  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1/8 cup white sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 package bread yeast
  • 1/3 cup warm water (follow packet instructions for temperature)
  • 1 egg
  • 3 cups whole wheat flour

Combine olive oil, salt, sugar and boiling water until sugar dissolves. Set aside to cool. In a small bowl, add yeast to water and set aside. Add egg, flour and cooled sugar solution and yeast together. Kneed on lightly floured surface for about 5 minutes. Let rise in bowl covered with damp cloth for about 45 minutes or until about twice its size.

Divide into equal size pieces and place on lightly greased baking sheets. Bake at 350 for 15 to 20 minutes, or until golden brown. Serve immediately.
